A tip is of little use if the bet it suggests cannot lawfully be placed, so the legal position comes before anything else in the tipping process.

Racing and sports betting for people in New Zealand may be offered only by TAB NZ. That has held since 28 June 2025, by section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020. TAB and Betcha belong to the same operator. A New Zealand bookmaker licence cannot be applied for, and a register of licensed bookmakers does not exist.

According to DIA, overseas firms offering such bets break the law; no individual can be convicted for an offshore bet. The minimum age for betting with TAB NZ is 18.
